My Grandad used to talk about sky hooks a lot. He went through the ancient apprenticeship system on his journey to being a master carpenter. Part of the right of passage for the young apprentices was being sent to the stores to fetch a sky hook, to the great hilarity of all. I still have a child-like fascination with cranes which in some sense are sky hooks that descends from the heavens. This one is in the Kempton Steam Museum housing the largest working steam engine in the world. Its an amazing place to visit, especially on a steaming day. I spent a morning just sitting in awe at the engineering and painted this little work on site.
