A selection of my work
"Hosta La Vista!" - In memory of the last hosta in our garden. Shortlisted for the British Art Prize 2026 and exhibited in the OXO Gallery.
"AI Stole My Job" - With the rapid rise of AI art, artists mannikins are rapidly becoming redundant. Are humans heading the same way?
"Heart You" - An imagined Edwardian Emoji. My grandparents’ generation could have used it in their youth.
"One Mindfulness Session Too Many" - Inspired by the idea, that I hope isn’t true, that we are in some sort of simulation. Too much self-awareness may reveal more than we are ready for.
"Opposites Attract" - Exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2024 where the complete edition sold out.
"Beach Hut" - Hermit crabs fascinate me, our carelessness with the environment disappoints me. Can nature adapt quickly enough?
"Overload" - The world and the individual seem to be dealing with so much at the moment, overload is everywhere.
"Keep Taking the Pills" - I have epilepsy and take these pills twice a day to manage it. For many, there are all manner of brain health issues that are hard to manage and the fear of blowing the pressure gauge is ever present.
"So We Do Know" - Schrödinger’s cat has always fascinated me, but I have had to explain this pun quite a lot. It turns out that not everyone’s curiosity has been grabbed by this particular cat.
"Jedi Coffee Break" - I was ten when the original Star Wars film was released. It was astonishing and had a profound effect which, every now and again, bubbles up into my art.
"R2 What Have You Done?" - I cannot explain why but a mash-up of ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ seemed like a good idea…
"Abundance of Caution" - came across this boat belonging to a very careful owner on the Thames in Battersea and painted it as I saw it, en plein air. I think the idea will resurface in print form at some point.
"No likes, no point" - Like most of us I have joined the army of phone-wielding photographers chasing the dopamine hit of a social media like. No photo, no post, no likes, no point…?
"Possibilities" - The possibilities that the pigments might become are endless. Whenever I visit a retrospective of an artist’s work I am always delighted when their palette and other tools of their craft are exhibited.
"Sky Hook" - My Grandad used to talk about sky hooks a lot. He went through the apprenticeship system on his journey to being a master carpenter. Part of the right of passage for the young apprentices was being sent to the stores to fetch a sky hook, to the great hilarity of all. Cranes are in some sense sky hooks made real. I painted this one in the Kempton Steam Museum housing the largest working steam engine in the world.
"Allowed Fruit" - The biblical forbidden fruit wasn’t specified. It became an apple in popular and artistic tradition as an accident of Latin and English translation. No one seems to have suggested oranges were ever the culprit, so these are definitely allowed. Cézanne said that “with an apple I will astonish Paris”, I’m aiming at eliciting a couple of Instagram likes from London with my orange.
"Boiled Egg and Soldiers" - My favourite breakfast for as long as I can remember.
"The Last Dodo" - A response to the plight of the Northern White Rhino. Now functionally extinct with two females and a test tube of sperm remaining. The case of the Dodo has stuck with me since childhood, apparently someone noticed that none had been seen for a while so they organised a search and confirmed that they were gone. Had they found one, or a viable egg, I wonder what they would have done - extreme protection in a velvet and barbed wire nest? Too little too late… Maybe our just in time awareness of the Northern White Rhino situation is a tiny sign of progress?
